These contestants are new to breakaway roping. They are in the early stages of developing their fundamentals — focusing on horsemanship, swing control, and building confidence in live competition. The emphasis is on learning, improving, and gaining experience rather than speed. Based on prior year data, this roper is most likely to have a catch ratio under 30% with an average time over 5 seconds.

Contestants at this level are building a foundation and working on rope handling, positioning and horsemanship. Typically, these ropers compete at junior high or high school rodeos and local jackpots with limited but growing success. They are transitioning from learning consistency to developing competitiveness. Based on prior year data, this roper will have an average catch ratio of 30-35% and an average time of 4.0-4.4 seconds.

Intermediate contestants demonstrate solid fundamentals and consistent rope handling. They can be competitive at jackpots, amateur, and college rodeos, and high school state finalists. These ropers can execute competitive runs and place regularly, showing growing control, confidence, and awareness of cattle and scoring but will struggle at certain times and in certain setups. Based on prior year data, this roper will have an average catch ratio of 35-40% and an average time of 3.6-4.0 seconds.

Advanced contestants are competitive at both amateur and open levels. They exhibit strong horsemanship, sharp scoring, and refined rope handling. They may have made short rounds, placed in open averages, or qualified for college or amateur finals. They are capable of fast, controlled runs but may still lack the consistency and precision of higher-tier ropers. Based on prior year data, this roper will have an average catch ratio of 40-45% and an average time of 3.3-3.7 seconds.

Contestants at this level demonstrate elite-caliber horsemanship and timing. They maintain control under pressure, minimize breakout errors, and are highly consistent across multiple setups. These ropers have the ability and record to qualify for top amateur championships/finals, regularly competing alongside professionals with speed and accuracy. Based on prior year data, this roper will have an average catch ratio over 50% and an average time of 3.0-3.4 seconds.

This classification represents the highest level of breakaway roping. These ropers have the ability and record to qualify for WPRA Circuit Finals, NFBR (National Finals Breakaway Roping) or have ranked within the Top 50 of the WPRA World Standings within the past three years. They exemplify professional-level consistency, horsemanship, and execution — setting the standard for the sport. Based on prior year data, this roper will have an average catch ratio over 60% and an average time below 3 seconds.
